What is Postnatal Depression?

Postnatal depression is depression during the period after having a baby.  One can think of it just like any other Depression, but this one is specifically triggered by "the stress of having a baby".  For example, one can say that other people may have post Divorce depression or post War depression, more well known as PTSD ie Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Usually, there is a family history of Depression in these cases.  Hence, it is very important for a person with a family history of depression, to seek professional advice prior to having a baby in order for some preventative strategies to be implemented.  This will help to prevent Postnatal Depression.

Please note that if you have a family history of Depression, it does NOT mean that you will get Postnatal Depression.  It just mean that you are at higher risk and hence, preventative strategies should be considered to improve outcome.
